When you have a nice tan, you look and feel great. But baking in the sun can be a pretty bad idea – spend too much time in the sun, and your skin will end up aging much faster than it normally would. And then there’s UV radiation to contend with. The solution? Getting a sunless spray tan.


What Is A Spray Tan?

Spray tanning is a type of sunless tanning. A fine mist containing Dihydroxyacetone (DHA ) is sprayed all over your body. DHA temporarily causes the skin to turn a shade of bronze, and the effect can last for 3 to 7 days. You would want to note that this does not give you any protection from the sun’s UV rays – so if you are going to be in the sun you will want to use a sunscreen.

While it is possible to do this by yourself at home, there’s always the possibility that you will breathe in harmful chemicals. Are Tanning Beds Safe?

Indoor tanning uses two kinds of UA rays – UVA and UVB. Both of these are very dangerous to the skin – more so for young people.

Indoor tanning methods – be it a tanning bed, sunlamp or a booth – are designed to give users a very high level of UV radiation in a relatively short amount of time. While exposure to UV radiation is dangerous, getting exposed to such high levels in a short span of time can be very, very harmful to the skin.

Tanning beds – or any of the other indoor tanning systems that use UV rays have been known to cause …

1. Premature aging : Wrinkles, age spots are other signs of aging appear a lot sooner in frequent users.

3. Cancers – skin cancer, eye cancer and eye diseases that can potentially lead blindness. There’s a very strong correlation between tanning beds and occurrence of skin cancer.

Some people mistakenly believe indoor tanning is a safe way to get vitamin D. Nothing could be further from the truth. The safest sources of vitamin D are food and natural sunlight. Tanning Pills

These pills contain additives that get deposited in the skin and other parts of the body. Canthaxanthin is the main ingredient in most of these pills.

You would want to note that none of the tanning pills are FDA approved – and so these may not be safe.

Benefits of Spray Tan

There are several advantages to getting a spray tan instead of choosing to use a tanning bed …

1. It’s easy. You can either do it yourself, or get it done at the spa. Nothing could be simpler.

2. It’s not messy. You do not have to spread a gel or lotion all over your body.

3. It’s far quicker. You just spray a fine mist all over your body, and you are done.

4. It’s safe. You do not expose your skin to UV radiation with spray tanning. As long as you take care to see that you do not inhale the tanning solution, this process is pretty safe. Just wear a nose clip and cover your face – or visit the spa and let the professionals do it all for you.

What To Do Before A Spray Tan?

Here are a few tips that will help you get the best color possible from the process …

1. Shave or wax a couple of days prior to the day of your appointment: Waxing afterward will tend to remove the color. So you definitely do not want to do any kind of hair removal right after getting a spray tan. You also would certainly not want stubble covering your finely bronzed legs – that would most certainly ruin the effect. So you would want to remove all unwanted hair before the process.

If you are going to be waxing, make sure there’s no wax on your skin. Layers of wax – no matter how thin – will mean the spray will not stick to your skin, resulting in a blotchy appearance.

Since freshly waxed skin is likely to have open pores, and open pores can lead to skin irritation or other reactions, you will want to do hair removal at least 24 to 48 hours before spray tanning.

The same would apply to threading as well. But since threading will not remove the color, you can do it after the initial shower as well.

Have nail polish on : Having a coat of nail polish over your nails will keep them from staining.

Exfoliate: Scrub off all dead skin flakes from your body using an exfoliant before the process. This way, the color will be evenly applied all over your body.

Eyelash extensions: Get eyelash extensions applied prior to getting the spray tan. The process of applying eyelash extensions requires the use of tape and gel pads – and these can affect the color if applied right after getting the tan.

Makeup / sunscreen / lotions: You would not want to have any kind of lotions, makeup or sunscreen on your skin during the spray tanning process. They will all have to be removed.

What to Do After a Spray Tan?

Avoid taking a shower for at least 10 to 12 hours after the process.

No swimming or exercise at least for 10 to 12 hours. You do not want to sweat before getting the initial shower.

Do not wash your face for 10 to 12 hours.

As far as possible, avoid getting your skin wet for a few hours at least.

If you have to do housework, avoid wearing rubber / vinyl gloves.

Avoid wearing a bra for as long as possible after getting the tan. But if you must wear one, wear a strapless bra.

Long Term Care: Make The Tan Last Longer

It is essential that you follow these steps if you want the tan to last long…

Avoid exfoliating until the tan naturally starts fading away. Loufas, body scrubs and the like can make your color fade much faster than it otherwise would.

Avoid using hair removal creams as these can remove the tan as well.

Shaving and waxing can also affect the color – which is why you will want to exfoliate before the process. You will not be able to do it for at least a week afterward.

You will want to wear a sunscreen when you are in the sun. The spray tan does not give you any immunity against UV radiation.
